Catalina
Island
| Though only 26 miles across the Catalina Channel from San Pedro,
Catalina Island
is another world reflecting the environment of southern
California circa 1900. Outdoor education on the island is
a journey into California's pastoral yesterdays. There are
pristine beaches, quiet coves and abundant flora and
fauna. |
|
 |
All of this combines to make the
island an excellent outdoor classroom and a quiet retreat site. Ninety percent
of the island is preserved and managed in its natural state by the Catalina
Island Conservancy.
Emerald Bay is located on a picturesque and quiet cove with tidal pools and smooth water for snorkeling
and canoeing. The site is linked to the interior of the island by a network of trails
leading to old silver mines, isolated coves and spectacular overnight sites. Students bunk in clean cabins
next to the beach with modern bath facilities nearby. Meals are prepared in a modern kitchen and served in a comfortable
dining area.
An overnight sleep-out in beautiful Parson's Cove is an option for you and your school.

Our Catalina Island programs offer snorkeling, touch-tank lessons, tidepooling, coastal studies, hiking,
canoeing and kayaking.
You choose which
options to use. We'll work with you every step of the way to make sure your
school's goals are met. |
In addition to the excellent opportunities for
marine science, Catalina Island is a wonderful place to study an island
ecosystem. Our site has excellent access to the unique flora and fauna of the island. As with all Naturalists at
Large programs, the academic goals of the program
are developed in conjunction with each school. You
are assured that the academic schedule complements your students'
curriculum
and that your school's goals for the program are met. Naturalists
at Large can also assist with your transportation arrangements.
