Eastern Sierra Nevada including the Bodie Historic Ghost Town, Death Valley & Mono Lake

Enter a different California when you explore the eastern Sierra Nevada. The mountains here feel taller, more wild and exciting. And that means our options for programs are more varied.

Whether you stay in the Sierra or venture into the Owens Valley to explore Mono Lake, cross over the divide into the depths of Death Valley or take a step back in time to the historic Bodie Ghost Town, the east side will generate amazement and delight. You will never forget your visit to the Eastern Sierra.

The Eastern Sierra Nevada

With Naturalists at Large, establish a base camp or a tour camp - your choice. Spend your time in one location or travel and length and breath of this remarkable region by bus or automobile.

Better than any old west movie set, Bodie State Historic Park is a genuine ghost town where you can walk down the deserted streets of a place that once had a population of 10,000 people. A small but significant part of the town survives, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Interiors remain as they were left, stocked with furniture and goods, when residents deserted Bodie in search of greener pastures.

Death Valley National Park has an ominous name that belies its awesome beauty and genetic diversity. To the untrained eye Death Valley is a wasteland. To the experienced NALster, it is not only a place of sublime beauty, Death Valley is a place that draws you back time and time again.
From its lowest place [Badwater at -282' below sea level] to its highest point [Telegraph Peak 11000+ ft] Death Valley boasts some of the best hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing and educational opportunities of any place in California.

Over 85% of the state population of California Gulls nest at Mono Lake each year.

The lake is a critical nesting habitat for several bird species. It's one of North America's most productive ecosystems.

The unique nature of Mono Lake makes it one of the best places in California to learn about migration, species diversity and the political role of water in the most populous state in the Union. Most of the water for Los Angeles comes from Mono Lake. Click here for Mono Lake Webcam.
