Santa
Monica Mountains
The
Santa Monica Mountains are an urban wilderness in the heart of
west Los
Angeles and perfect for middle and elementary school students.
| Our Santa Monica
Mountain programs focus on the unique environments of these mountains, including their
adjacent marine areas.
|
|
 |
Naturalists at Large provides outdoor learning opportunities focused on an introduction to
these wonderful urban mountains.
The academic program emphasizes the study of the chaparral community, comparisons
of fresh water and marine environments and/or Native American cultural history. We offer one day to one week
programs.
Point Mugu,
Leo Carrillo
State Park, and Malibu Creek
State Park
offer excellent opportunities for novice campers. they're a scant 40 miles north of Santa Monica in the
Santa Monica Mountains National
Recreational Area. The area has tidepools, coastal
chaparral, riparian corridors and oak woodlands.
Canyons meet the sea in
a combination of sandy beaches and rocky bluffs at beautiful Sycamore
Cove at Point Mugu. During the fall, thousands of migrating Monarch butterflies
come here to overwinter in canyon trees. There is excellent access from the campgrounds to the
Park's extensive
trail system. Point Mugu is one of the last wild sites in coastal
Southern California.
Leo
Carrillo State Park offers tide pools,
rocky headlands and sandy beaches.

Malibu
Lagoon State Park is the perfect place for tidepools and to
study a coastal estuary.
This site can be used in conjunction with Malibu Creek State Park or Camp Gilmore and Camp Bloomfield programs. |
