Calaveras Big Trees State Park
- In 1852, a hunter
made a startling discovery. While tracking a grizzly bear he had
wounded, he found himself staring up at a monstrous tree, larger
than anything he had ever seen. Of course, nobody believed him
and when they finally did, all they could think of was cutting
the largest or the large trees down. We know these trees today
as the Giant Sequoia. During our programs we visit the grove
where this mighty tree once stood. Its still possible to stand
on the stump which was planed and used for a dance floor, bar
and bowling alley. Calaveras Big Trees has been a popular
tourist destination ever since - and a state park since 1931.
Join us at this unique place and experience a unparalleled
corner of old California.
