Marine Science

Located ninety miles north of San Francisco, Salt Point State Park has 6000 acres of diverse habitats, including the Pygmy Forest and Kruse Rhododendron Reserve. See the site description!

Several rocky beaches provide excellent opportunities to study the inter-tidal zone.

The rugged coastline varies dramatically from protected sandy beach coves to sharp bluffs and sheer sandstone cliffs that plunge straight to the sea.

This large coastal park offers a rich variety of botanical, geological, marine and historical topics. Nearby Fort Ross State Park provides an opportunity to visit an early 19th Century Russian settlement of California. For more information on Salt Point State Park, please read about our Outdoor Learning Centers.

A few miles north of Santa Barbara, El Capitan Canyon has it all. A beautiful streamside location, beaches, canyons, tidepools, chaparral covered hillsides - all combined to create numerous educational opportunities. The tidepools and beaches of El Capitan State Park are a fifteen-minute walk away. Wholesome meals are served under the oaks. Kayaking can be included in most programs.

Students and chaperones stay in modern cabins with baths. The perennial stream is prefect for studying freshwater ecology.

A new high-challenge course makes El Capitan Canyon a very excellent site!

Leo Carrillo State Park offers tide pools, rocky headlands and sandy beaches; and Malibu Lagoon State Park has tide pools and an estuary. Employ the lagoon in conjunction with Cottontail Ranch, Camp Gilmore or Malibu Creek State Park programs. For information on these and nearby sites, please read about our Santa Monica Mountains sites.

It's only 26 miles across the sea. Santa Catalina Island is closer than you think and you can be on the island and in the water by noon. Naturalists at Large provides schools with a Catalina program tailored to their needs, an excellent alternative to the more inflexible programs offered by others.

Our Lodge-Based site on has superior hiking opportunities, great accommodations and incredible snorkeling. Our Catalina Island programs offer snorkeling, touch-tank lessons, tidepooling, coastal studies, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. An overnight sleep-out is an option.
