Safety
& Our Instructors
|
A cornerstone of the Naturalists at Large safety philosophy
is to provide a comfortable outdoor experience.
Students learn techniques to make them feel safe and at ease in the outdoors.
At a minimum, our instructors hold First Aid and CPR certifications and attend our own extensive
safety training programs
and workshops. Each of our sites has plans to meet specific emergencies.
|
|
 |
|
The most effective part of our safety program is
prevention. Instructors provide continual training
throughout all program activities, teaching students to be
aware of potential hazards. |
|
Naturalists at Large staff members are experienced outdoor teachers.
Our goal continues to be leaders in
staff training and preparation.
Professionals in their field, our
naturalists hold college degrees or the equivalent.
They possess skills, such as rock
climbing, backpacking, canoeing mountaineering, natural history,
outdoor teaching, snorkeling and kayaking.

| Some instructors have studied education while others come from a background in the sciences. All have a
lifelong enthusiasm for the outdoors, a wealth of practical experience, a special commitment to outdoor education
and have experience working with children and adults in a wilderness environment. |
Our instructors are enthusiastic with a talent for teaching and the
training
necessary to handle the diverse needs of students. All
Naturalists at Large instructors are required to attend skill and safety seminars, emergency medical training
and in-service workshops throughout the year. Many of our women and men have trekked in Nepal, climbed or traveled
in Europe, skied the Canadian wilderness or kayaked through the Sea of Cortez. They come from all over our country
and bring an individual level of expertise that strongly compliments the philosophy and goals of Naturalists at
Large.
